The WWE is rumored to be holding another WWE Draft after SummerSlam. The tradition has moved Superstars from Raw to SmackDown and SmackDown to Raw, while sometimes including NXT stars who have made the jump to the main roster. The idea is to give each brand a facelift and a fresh look.

Unfortunately, as is evidenced by last year's disastrous mess of a draft, the idea on paper is a lot more attractive than how it plays out in reality. Last year's draft was uneventful, corny, and most fans were wondering why WWE even bothered.

This year, if WWE goes with another draft, there are a few areas they need to improve on if their hope is to have the draft actually make a difference.

Quit Moving Groups Of Feuding Stars To The Same Brand

Last year, WWE decided to move Superstars who were feuding with each other to the same brand. Essentially, they moved a rivalry from SmackDown over to Raw and visa versa. Case in point, Seth Rollins moved from Raw to SmackDown while feuding with Rey Mysterio and Dominik. It could have ended their feud, but WWE also moved Rey, Dominik and Murphy, all who were part of the storyline and things picked up right where they left off.

The idea of the WWE Draft is to have fresh feuds and new storylines, not to showcase the same matches on a different show. If WWE knows when the draft is going to be, close off the current angles so that talent can move over but find an end to their program, thus starting a new angle when they land on another night.

Quit Breaking Up Tag Teams Without A Plan

Last year was a blatantly obvious attempt by WWE to split up teams that actually had something going, but they did so with no real direction. Otis and Tucker split up, The Iiconics disbanded, New Day split and R-Truth and Carmella went their separate ways. Not one of these stars went on to do bigger and better things.

HEAVY MACHINERY

At the same time, WWE kept some teams together. Robert Roode and Dolph Ziggler stayed a team and were drafted with one pick, Retribution remained, The Riott Squad was drafted at the same time and inexplicably, The Street Profits and New Day switched brands, only to give each other their respective championships.

It was clear WWE didn't have a viable plan for these teams and it showed. There's nothing wrong with splitting up the odd team. Just don't do it for the sake of doing it.

Use NXT Stars

Last year, only Arturo Ruas was drafted from NXT. Technically, one could argue he was a Raw Superstar at that point because he'd been taking part in the Raw Underground segments. Why Raw or SmackDown chose not to draft anyone from the NXT brand made absolutely no sense. Some of the best and brightest stars in the company's future are on that brand and the idea of a draft in any other sport is to pick for the future.

There are plenty of NXT stars waiting for their opportunity and the draft is a great place for them to make their debut. WWE can't make that mistake again this year.

Make Something Of The "Free Agent" Label

There were a number of free agents that actually signed with other brands after the draft. The rule technically states if a WWE Superstar isn't drafted, they become a free agent. In the history of the WWE Draft, only Heath Slater made that rule work for him.

It's an interesting idea that WWE rarely plays up as it could. Becoming a free agent doesn't just have to be about not getting drafted. Why not sell the idea weeks before the draft that a Superstar's contract is coming due and by the time he/she is eligible for the draft, that star can go to the highest bidder?

Drew McIntyre Brock Lesnar Edge

WWE doesn't have to do with this many people, but there can be at least two or three stars the company focuses on and really plays up the idea of landing a big fish. Think back to when Scott Steiner made his debut for WWE. His final run in WWE didn't amount to much, but his debut was a huge deal.

Have Actual GMs Who Can Make Trades

Last year, we didn't know who was making picks. Stephanie McMahon announced them, but there was no real rhyme or reason as to why these stars were selected or who was making the picks.

Why not hire GMs or write a storyline between Sonya Deville and Adam Pierce where these two can't seem to co-exist so one gets to run Raw while the other SmackDown? They can have a have a heated rivalry that starts with the draft and who gets the better selections. One can throw a wrench into the other's plans or one can gloat about how they snagged the other GM's biggest star. It doesn't have to be these two, but that's an easy out for WWE creative since the story writes itself.
