Los Angeles Rams star defensive end Aaron Donald has no plans to end his holdout and looks prepared to become a restricted free agent next year, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

This doesn't bode well for a team that won the NFC West with an 11-5 record, thanks in large part to the domination of Donald. He was ranked as the best player in the league last season by Pro Football Focus, generating an impressive 94.4 rating. Donald ranked as the second best player by PFF in 2016, garnering a 95.6 grade.

Donald's situation was explained thoroughly by Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk. Though Donald is entering his fifth season in the NFL, the CBA outlines "any player under contract who doesn’t report to camp by the 30th day before the start of the regular season does not acquire a year of credit toward free agency."

Since Donald held out last season, he lost a year of credit, and it sounds like he's doing so again. Holding out is a major risk for Donald, who would surely land a contract of over $100 million if he hit free agency, but he's only pushing back that opportunity by another year.

It's an ugly situation with perhaps no resolution in sight, unless Rams GM Les Snead gives into Donald's demands. Though he did a fine job in landing more Pro Bowl talent this offseason, Snead surely knows there's no replacing a player of Donald's caliber.

The Rams signed star defensive lineman Ndamukong Suh to a one-year deal in free agency, and he and Donald were to form the next great pass-rushing duo. The Rams need Donald if they're to compete for the Super Bowl next season, so the fans can only hope the matter is resolved soon enough.
