Buffalo Bills quarterback A.J. McCarron suffered a hairline collarbone fracture during Friday's preseason game, according to Vic Carucci of the Buffalo News.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport added that McCarron will "miss several weeks," but there isn't an exact timeline on the matter. That means the starting quarterback job for now is between rookie Josh Allen and second-year man, Nathan Peterman.

After spending four years with the Cincinnati Bengals as a backup signal-caller, McCarron signed with the Bills a two-year contract worth $10 million. McCarron was in line to be the team's starter for Week 1, but this injury obviously changes things, and he may only start if both Allen and Peterman struggle while they have the reigns.

It's only the second week of preseason, and there have already been a boatload of injuries to notable players. Philadelphia Eagles Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles suffered a shoulder injury while tackled against the New England Patriots on Thursday, and they await the results to find out if it's severe.

Speaking of the Patriots, first round pick offensive tackle Isaiah Wynn tore his Achilles on Thursday and is done for the season. It's the worst part of preseason football, and McCarron and the Bills are the latest victims.

McCarron led the Bengals to the AFC North in 2015 when starter Andy Dalton fractured his thumb during Week 14. McCarron played well and nearly helped the Bengals win their postseason game since 1990, but the rival Pittsburgh Steelers narrowly escaped with an 18-16 victory.

The Bills ended an 18-year playoff drought in 2017, but nonetheless traded starting quarterback Tyrod Taylor to the Cleveland Browns. With McCarron and Allen in the fold, Buffalo upgraded at the position, and the expectations have naturally grown for the franchise.

They just have to hope McCarron will return sooner rather than later, and that the Allen-Peterman duo will hold the fort.
