Washington Redskins signal-caller Alex Smith is reportedly facing post-operation complications from the surgery he had to undergo to repair his season-ending leg injury.

On Thursday Ian Rapoport from NFL Network reported that “Smith is battling an infection related to the surgery he had on his broken fibula and tibia,” and whereas it’s unclear if this will have an impact in the quarterback career, he noted that the doctors were handling it with seriousness. Later Rapoport added that they were removing tissue to clear the infection after several procedures. Eric Bickel of 106.7 The Fan described the surgery complications as "devastating" on Twitter after talking with several sources.

Smith suffered a broken tibia and fibula in his right leg Nov.19, 2018, which was initially programmed to be an 8-10-month recovery according to Redskins head coach Jay Gruden.

After the reports regarding former Kansas City quarterback recovery difficulties came out, the Washington Redskins released a statement on Twitter requesting privacy for Alex Smith and his family as the quarterback continues to deal with his recovery.

"On behalf of Alex Smith, we appreciate all of the concerns and prayers over the injury he incurred on November 18th against the Houston Texans. Although this is a serious injury, Alex and his family remain strong. We would ask that everyone please honor the Smith family's request for privacy at this time."

Before the injury, Smith had stacked up 2,180 yards for ten touchdowns with a 6-3 record, since then the Redskins have fallen from first to third place in the NFC East losing three straight games. Initially, the 34-year-old veteran was replaced by Colt McCoy, but he suffered a season-ending fractured fibula in week 13 leaving College Football superstar Mark Sanchez as the team’s top quarterback.

With a 6-6 record, the Redskins are sitting third in the NFC East just one game behind the divisional leaders Dallas Cowboys, but with no real offensive leader their chances to make the playoffs this season are quite low.

On Sunday, Washington will face the Giants who have won three of his last four games including a staggering win over the Bears.
