The Boston Celtics have been reported as one of the teams that New Orleans Pelicans star Anthony Davis would welcome a trade to, but there's a rule in the CBA that forbids such a move from happening.

Nicole Yang from Boston.com explained the "Rose Rule," which is named after former Chicago Bulls star and MVP Derrick Rose. The rule lets "certain players coming off their rookie-scale contracts to earn 30 percent of the salary cap as opposed to 25 percent."

As Yang detailed, a player needs to have achieved either the MVP award, Defensive Player of the Year award for a pair of All-NBA Selections.

Both Davis and Celtics point guard Kyrie Irving have accomplished such feats already. And under the current CBA, teams cannot trade for two players that signed the "Rose Rule" extension.

So unless the Celtics trade Irving, they're not eligible to trade for Davis. The former has already verbally committed to signing an extension with the Celtics after the season, so the odds of getting Davis are incredibly low right now.

However, the Celtics will be allowed to trade for Davis if Irving does indeed sign a new contract with them this offseason. His current deal will have expired, so the C's won't be forbidden from trading for Davis.

But either way, Boston will have plenty of competition for Davis this offseason. The Los Angeles Lakers have been widely mentioned as the favorites for Davis' services, and some believe he might want to remain with the Pelicans after all.

What This Means

The struggling Celtics enter play on Monday with a 10-10 record, and though GM Danny Ainge would probably love to make a blockbuster move to fix the team, he's not allowed to trade for Davis right now.

Furthermore, the C's might have problems putting together the right package for Davis, given the early struggles from youngsters Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. Boston would likely have to give up those two in such a deal, but if their play diminishes, so does the trade value.
