The Atlanta Hawks announced today that they have signed Isaac Humphries, a big man out of the University of Kentucky who had been playing overseas and putting up some pretty impressive numbers. He'll come in to replace Cole Aldrich, who recently departed the Hawks to take a contract in China.

Chris Vivlamore of AJC was the first to report the news saying Humphries will join the Erie Bayhawks in the G League after the preseason ends and Atlanta has to cut down to their final regular season roster. Humphries will try to get a call-up to come in and help replenish some of the lack of depth the organization is feeling with key injuries and few big men on the roster.

In two seasons with Kentucky, Humphries averaged 2.8 points and 2.8 rebounds per game. He left the program hoping to pursue a professional basketball career but things didn't work out exactly as he might have hoped. He went undrafted in the NBA Entry Draft, went back to Australia and ultimately played for the Sydney Kings of the NBL. There, he upped his game averages and his impressive field goal percentage of .583 helped him win NBL rookie of the year honors. He also appeared in 12 contests last year with FMP Beograd in Serbia, averaging 4.5 points and 2.2 rebounds in 9.0 minutes (.650 FG%).

Clearly, the Hawks have noticed his international play and have asked him to join a young team led by rookie point guard Trae Young. If he makes it, this will be Humphries first taste of the NBA and he may not get a better opportunity than in Atlanta where the Hawks are young and rebuilding their franchise.

The Hawks have presumably signed him to a contract containing an Exhibit 10 clause. This allows for a bonus of up to $50,000 and the team will retain his G League rights. Humphries could choose not to play with Erie and join a different pro league but it seems the Hawks had some information suggesting he'd be happy to stay with Erie in the hopes of getting the call.
