Austin Aries would like the word heavyweight to be dropped from the Impact World Title while the belt is in his possession.

Austin Aries has not wasted any time when it comes to diving back into the independent circuit that treated him so well before he ever arrived on the scene in WWE. It was well under a year ago that A-Double left WWE following a run in NXT and on 205 Live, and while he was great under both banners, it already feels as if he never left the indies, and we mean that to be taken as a compliment.

Arguably though, the place that Aries has enjoyed the most success throughout his career is Impact Wrestling, or TNA as it was known during his first stint there. The self-proclaimed greatest man who ever lived recently returned there and is already the promotion's World Heavyweight Champion for the second time in his career. Although that match happened a few weeks ago, it wasn't televised until this week.

Impact naturally posted a congratulatory message to their new champion on social media, and Aries took issue with the name of the title he now holds. A-Double quoted the tweet from Impact and declared that he will be altering the name of the World Heavyweight Championship. Aries has removed the word heavyweight and tweeted "No weight distinction. I’m not a heavyweight, but I am world class."

Ironically, if WWE had that mentality with Aries this time last year, then he might very well still be with the company. The likes of him and Neville were pigeonholed as cruiserweights and placed on 205 Live with seemingly no prospect of wrestling many non-cruiserweight matches. That process looks destined to repeat itself with the addition of Superstars like Hideo Itami and Roderick Strong to the cruiserweight division.

While world championships have normally had the word heavyweight somewhere in the title, we are now in a day and age where it doesn't really make sense for it to be there anymore. Pro wrestling is no longer an industry where only the tallest and heaviest men can make it to the top of the pile, and Superstars of all shapes and sizes have been world champions. Neither of WWE's major titles has the word heavyweight openly associated with them, and for the time being at least neither does Impact Wrestling's.
