Slimming down to take on someone the size of Moose might seem crazy to some, but Austin Aries has explained why it makes perfect sense.

While Austin Aries has assured fans that he didn't necessarily leave WWE on bad terms when he parted ways with the promotion last year, that doesn't hide the fact that he is no longer there. Clearly, A-Double saw more for himself than a spot on 205 Live, and he is probably not alone. Since leaving WWE, Aries has proved to the wrestling world that he will not be defined by his size.

Right now, the self-proclaimed greatest man to ever live is the Impact World Champion. Note that the word heavyweight has been dropped from that title. As soon as Aries won the championship from Eli Drake, he made it clear that he didn't want it to be referred to as a heavyweight title. He is not a heavyweight and he is currently holding the belt, so it makes sense.

This Sunday at Slammiversary XVI, A-Double will be defending that championship against Moose, a man who is most definitely a heavyweight. You would think that Aries would be trying to bulk up ahead of a match against someone so much bigger than him but no, quite the contrary. During an Impact Wrestling teleconference on Wednesday, Aries revealed to The Sportster that he has actually been trying to slim down in time for Sunday.

"Putting on five or ten pounds isn't all of a sudden gonna make me big, but being more flexible more fluid more quick in the ring will give me more of an advantage," Aries explained. The champ also revealed that for a match versus Pentagon Jr., he would pack on a little weight to get that size advantage, but against someone as big as Moose that would be pointless. "I might as well exploit the advantage I do have which is quickness and endurance and why not take that to another level and use that to my advantage?"

It is certainly an interesting take and one that makes a lot of sense. Not many wrestlers of a similar size to Aries would even consider doing what he has done to prep for Moose. Most would simply stay the same size and train in the same way. A-Double's approach to the match not only exemplifies why he is a cut above many other wrestlers, but it also makes each one of his big matches unique and different. Be sure to catch Slammiversary on July 22, 2018, to find out if Aries' plan to defeat Moose is a successful one.
