Baron Corbin has yet to reveal the special guest referee for his Universal Championship match against Seth Rollins at this Sunday's Stomping Grounds pay-per-view, and the wait will drag on into Sunday.
According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter (h/t Ringside News), Corbin's choice "will be a big mystery" leading up to Sunday, so we won't find out who the special guest referee is until the night of the show.
On this week's episode of Monday Night Raw, Elias announced that he was going to be the special guest official. However, Rollins attacked him with a steel chair to sabotage that plan. Later on, Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens revealed EC3 as the referee, but he too was attacked by the Architect with the chair.
So it's really anybody's guess who the special guest referee will be. WWE hasn't dropped any hints, and perhaps this is part of their ploy to help enhance ticket sales ahead of the event in Tacoma.
Take a look online at tickets for the Stomping Grounds show, and you'll notice that there are still plenty of seats available. Dave Meltzer recently reported that WWE was running a two-for-one promotion for Stomping Grounds, with tickets starting at just $20 - something you never see for a pay-per-view.
Unless sales skyrocket throughout the next two days, the Tacoma Dome is going to be empty for Sunday's big show - something the WWE could have never envisioned. Perhaps WWE hopes that by adding more mystery and intrigue to Corbin's special guest referee decision, it will lead to a growth in ticket sales.
What This Means
It'll be quite a thrill to see who Corbin brings out as his special guest referee on Sunday, with countless options on the table: An authority figure, a returning WWE legend, or another regular superstar. WWE has built up plenty of excitement here, so fans can only hope that the special guest referee will actually be somebody enticing.
