The New Day are one of the most innovative and entertaining acts that wrestling has seen in quite some time, and the trio of Kofi Kingston, Big E and Xavier Woods haven’t shown any signs of slowing down. But as The Big Show tells it on The Steve Austin Show, he almost disbanded them before they even got started.

When the group first got started, it didn’t look like the gimmick would get over and Show saw this. He explains how he approached Kingston in front of the other two men and told him so: “‘Damn Kofi, you’re Intercontinental Champion. You’re on the way to having a run with the big strap. You don’t need to drag yourself down with a couple of NXT idiots right now. You’re really probably gonna hurt yourself. You’re pulling yourself out of that championship run. Holding the Intercontinental Championship is a pretty big deal. You keep in that loop and eventually you’ll get a shot at the big one.”

As you’d expect from Kingston, he replied with a casual, ‘naw, we’ve got a good thing going here, I think we’ll be alright’, and several years down the track, they are still fantastic together. The New Day manage to keep their act fresh and entertaining while having some fantastic matches. As we know now, Kingston was right, but a couple of weeks later after seeing their chemistry together as a trio, Show went back to Kofi and said: “Forget every damn thing I said. What you guys got is absolute fricking magic. I love it. Forget every damn thing I said.”

The Big Show has been around for a while, so it’s probably not often that people backstage reject his advice, but clearly Kofi trusted his gut with this group, and it didn’t let him down because he’s remained relevant ever since. Even if the group does go on to break up, maybe Kingston could get a shot at the big strap like Show predicted all those years ago.

So what do you guys think? Do you enjoy watching The New Day? Should they break up anytime soon? As always, let us know all your thoughts and ideas in the comments below.
