This week in the NHL, there's no shortage of speculation. From players on the outs to released coaches here's the biggest news on the NHL rumor wire.
There are further developments when it comes to the NHL in Europe, a few teams are looking for scoring help, specifically the Carolina Hurricanes who, along with a number of other teams have interest in William Nylander and the Pittsburgh Penguins may choose to shake things up.
Here are the biggest rumors in the NHL for the week ending November 10, 2018.
NHL Teams in Europe
One of the issues the NHL faces is that they aren't the first to the market in Europe. The KHL has already expanded into markets like China, Finland, and Slovakia.
Hurricanes Looking for Scoring
Most know the Carolina Hurricanes have been keeping a close eye on the William Nylander situation out of Toronto, but Pierre LeBrun reports the Hurricanes are in the market for a scoring forward regardless of whether or not Nylander shakes loose. Carolina got off to a hot start but have started to cool off a bit and they're feeling the pressure to add before things go off the rails.
One of the pieces Carolina may move, according to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, is Valentin Zykov. The Hurricanes are testing the market on the left winger and perhaps packaging a 2019 draft pick to get a more proven scorer.
Penguins Might Make a Move
Jonathan Bombulie of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review wrote that Pittsburgh Penguins GM Jim Rutherford stated some roster changes might be needed to help break the team’s recent slump and improve team chemistry. There is some concern the team has "settled into" their previous success and the group has been together too long. The name that has popped up as potentially someone being shopped is Daniel Sprong.
He's been a healthy scratch or played farther down the lineup that the Penguins had expected he would and so far, hasn't grabbed a spot in the top nine. Darren Dreger was on NBCSN and noted Rutherford is working the phones and he thinks there might be a connection to the Los Angeles Kings who may also choose to shake things up a bit if the coaching change doesn't lead to some early wins.
Teams Interested in Nylander
Rory Boylen of Sportsnet.ca lists the Carolina Hurricanes, Los Angeles Kings, Philadelphia Flyers, Minnesota Wild, and Anaheim Ducks as potential trade destinations for William Nylander if the Toronto Maple Leafs decide to trade him.
If you look at each team, one by one, Carolina could offer up names like Brett Pesce, Justin Faulk, and Valentin Zykov, the Los Angeles Kings might try to move Jake Muzzin and/or Alec Martinez along with prospects Kale Clague and Rasmus Kupari, the Philadelphia Flyers have players like Shayne Gostisbehere, Travis Sanheim, Philippe Myers and Robert Hagg available and the Minnesota Wild could discuss Jonas Brodin, Jared Spurgeon and/or Matt Dumba.
More and more names could pop up as December 1, 2018 approaches. If Nylander doesn't sign or isn't traded by then, he can't play in the NHL this season. So too, as names come up, Nylander may be enticed to drop his asking price knowing a trade may be imminent.
