Biggest NHL Rumors This Week - November 18, 2018

There's plenty of news and speculation in the NHL this week. From Pittsburgh making moves to the Maple Leafs looking at trading William Nylander, there are trades, signings and possible moves making headlines around the league.

What will the New York Rangers do with Kevin Hayes now that he's playing so well? The same question can be asked in Detroit where Jimmy Howard is playing well. Would the Maple Leafs actually consider moving Auston Matthews instead of Nylander and how soon will Matt Duchene be moved out of Ottawa?

Here are the biggest rumors in the NHL this week, November 18, 2018.

Trade Names to Watch For

via Silver Seven Sens

Michael Traikos of the Toronto Sun took a look at five players he believed could be traded this season and among the names he listed were Tyler Toffoli of the LA Kings, William Nylander of the Toronto Maple Leafs, Matt Duchene of the Ottawa Senators, Sergei Bobrovsky of the Columbus Blue Jackets and Chris Kreider of the New York Rangers.

On the matter of Matt Duchene, Traikos wrote, "As a pending unrestricted free agent, he was always going to be traded sometime this season. But after a video surfaced of Duchene and several Ottawa players trashing their assistant coach during an infamous Uber ride, the Senators can no longer wait until the Feb. 25 trade deadline."

From that list, few expect Duchene and Bobrovsky to be back with their current teams.

William Nylander Trade Closer?

Via RDS.ca

While the hockey world still waits for a resolution on the William Nylander standoff in Toronto, Sportsnet analyst Damien Cox recently suggested the Maple Leafs might want to consider signing Nylander and Mitch Marner and trading Auston Matthews. He wrote, “John Tavares is playing so well it does make you think; why not sign Marner and Nylander, and trade Matthews for a whole pile of goodies? Not saying they would, but it’s not such a crazy idea anymore.”

Most will call this take absolutely nuts and it probably isn't realistic but there is certainly something happening in Toronto and a big move is likely coming. John Hoven tweeted that Maple Leaf games have been a busy place for scouts and that reps from teams like the San Jose Sharks, Minnesota Wild, Edmonton Oilers (Craig MacTavish), Buffalo Sabres, St. Louis Blues, and the Columbus Blue Jackets have all been to recent games.

The Toronto Maple Leafs asking price for Nylander is speculated to be a top-four defenceman along with a top-nine forward.

Penguins With More Going On?

Sergei Belski-USA TODAY Sports

The Pittsburgh Penguins made a trade earlier this week when the acquired Tanner Pearson from the Los Angeles Kings but it doesn't sound like that's the only move they'll be making.

Pens Inside Scoop reports GM Jim Rutherford said, “This could be the start of more changes or we’ll see how this goes for a little bit. Way things have gone for first part of the season it’s obvious we had to change something up.” Elliotte Friedman on Sportsnet’s Tim and Sid said that he believes the Penguins have couple other potential deals on the go including something with Anaheim. He hinted that trade could be a bigger trade in scope.

Red Wings To Keep Jimmy Howard?

via sportsillustrated

Ansar Khan of MLive is reporting the Detroit Red Wings might have changed their opinion on free agent goaltender Jimmy Howard. Originally, Howard was as good as gone in a trade before the deadline, but now it looks like his improved play might keep him around and have earned him another multi-year contract.

The Red Wings have Jonathan Bernier under contract, but their lack of netminding prospects makes hanging onto Howard more appealing.

Kevin Hayes Good Play Steers Eyes Toward Other Rangers

via espn

Brett Cyrgalis of the NY Post writes the recent play by the New York Rangers has made considering him an obvious trade piece not so obvious anymore. Hayes is a 26-year old pending unrestricted free agent and his value is going up. It will be a tricky decision between selling him when his price is high or hanging onto him because he's an important part of the New York Rangers future and playoff hopes.

The Rangers might instead focus on moving Mats Zuccarello or Chris Kreider.
