The Toronto Blue Jays have traded Roberto Osuna to the Houston Astros.

It isn't often that you hear about an MLB team trying to move on from a young, controllable and elite closing pitcher, but that is exactly what the Toronto Blue Jays have done with 23-year-old Roberto Osuna, who holds the record for youngest player to reach 100 Saves in their career. Osuna will be headed to the Houston Astros and the Jays have acquired Ken Giles, Hector Perez and David Paulino in return.

Ken Giles is an interesting case for the Blue Jays. The disgruntled former closer of the Astros was demoted to the minors on July 11, 2018, after what appeared to be a verbal altercation with manager A.J. Hinch. Over the season Giles has an 0 - 2 record, 31 strikeouts and a 4.99 ERA over 34 games. He has also collected 12 Saves. It will be interesting to see what other pieces the Jays have acquired. Compare this to Osuna who, over 15 games earned a 2.9 ERA with nine saves.

RELATED: MOST MLB TEAMS HAD NO INTEREST IN OSUNA

Earlier this season, Osuna landed in some very hot water when he was arrested for alleged domestic abuse. Because of this, the MLB suspended Osuna for 75 games on June 22, 2018. Osuna is expected to return Aug. 4, 2018, but it will be with a different team.

The Houston Astros have been connected to an Osuna trade for some time now, and he'll make an impact there if he can keep his nose clean. Some may look at him as damaged goods, but teams were not afraid of acquiring Aroldis Chapman after his own domestic abuse allegations.

This is ultimately a no-win situation for the Toronto Blue Jays. Fans have obviously soured on the young fireball pitcher because of the abuse issues, and the optics of keeping Osuna were poor because of the number of charities the Jays are involved with. Moving him seemed like a lost cause as with the stigma attached to his name, he has almost zero value on the trade market. For General Manager Ross Atkins it was literally a damned if you do damned if you don't situation.

It will be interesting to see how this move plays out for both the Astros and the Jays.  While many can see Giles as a step down from Osuna on paper, there was no way Toronto could keep him around with his reputation. Still, the reasons for his suspension aside, no one can argue that the Astros landed an impressive talent.
