The new NBA season is only six days old, but fans have already been made to witness quite the brawl, with Lakers and Rockets stars resorting to blows during the latter's 124-115 win at the Staples Center on Saturday night.

It was always going to be a feisty affair, but no one would have imagined what would unfold - especially not LeBron James, who certainly never expected his home debut to be marred by such controversy.

The Lakers were keeping close and were only trailing Houston by a single point with less than five minutes to go in the fourth quarter when things erupted.

Brandon Ingram got into it with James Harden, fouling and then pushing the reigning MVP before being led away by Lance Stephenson. But things took a wilder turn after Rajon Rondo exploded with a punch, hitting Chris Paul in the face after the Rockets guard poked a finger in his own face.

Paul retaliated by throwing punches of his own while Ingram rushed back to the thick of the action to throw blows himself.

Play was stopped for nearly 10 minutes as officials attempted to dish out justice, with Paul, Ingram and Rondo all getting ejected. And further reports claim that one of Rondo's family members was involved in a confrontation with Paul's wife Jada even after the players left the floor.

Check the brawl out in the video below:

Paul and the Rockets are alleging that Rondo spit in his face, but the Lakers have sided with their player after reviewing footage of the incident.

"That's unacceptable," Paul's teammate Carmelo Anthony said. "You don't do that to nobody - in sports, on the street. That's blatant disrespect. You don't do that. That's unacceptable. ... You don't even see that in the streets, man. I don't know what else to say about that."

The NBA have already launched an investigation into the incident - league executive vice president Kiki VanDeWeghe apparently witnessed the fight firsthand as he was in attendance - and suspensions could be announced ahead of the Rockets game against the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday night.
