The Montreal Canadiens scored a trio of goals in the final three minutes to defeat the Washington Capitals 6-4 on Monday - all while setting a record that may never be broken.

Following Max Domi's go-ahead goal with 21.1 seconds left, the Capitals had the net empty as they prepared for the face-off at center ice. Right off the draw, Joel Armia fired the puck into the empty net, and the Habs had set a new record with two goals in just two seconds.

Via Mike Brehm of USA Today Sports, the previous record was held by the St. Louis Eagles (March 12, 1935), and Minnesota Wild (Jan. 21, 2004) - with the two clubs scoring goals in just three seconds.

For Armia, the key was to simply fire the puck right when it was dropped in the face-off circle, and it was the perfect release to get it in the net. Just like that, the Canadiens walked away with more than a 6-4 victory - but an impressive record that could be matched - but unlikely to ever be broken.

With the victory, the Canadiens move to a surprising 7-3-2 on the season, after enduring one of the worst campaigns in franchise history in 2017-18. The Habs now sit third in the Atlantic Division, surging ahead of the struggling Toronto Maple Leafs.

Montreal built up a 3-1 lead early in the second period on Thursday, but the Capitals stormed back for three quick goals to grab the lead. Just when it looked as though the Habs would drop their second contest in 48 hours, they rallied for perhaps their most convincing win of the season.

Offseason acquisition Max Domi leads the way with 12 points in as many games, while fellow newcomer Tomas Tatar has 11 points through 12 contests. And yet, the Canadiens don't have Shea Weber back, as knee surgery is expected to keep him out until at least December.

What a start it's been for the Canadiens.
