The Arizona Cardinals have fired offensive coordinator Mike McCoy - who will be replaced by quarterbacks coach Byron Leftwich - according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The loss comes a day after the Cardinals were humiliated at home by the lowly Denver Broncos, 45-10. Head coach Steve Wilks told reporters earlier this week that there were jobs in jeopardy heading into this game, and sure enough one of his coordinators had to pay the price.

It was an awful performance for the Cardinals - who own the NFL's worst offense this season. Rookie quarterback Josh Rosen was sacked six times and three three interceptions - two of those returned for touchdowns.

Arizona committed five turnovers on the night and finished with just 223 yards of offense. This came against a Denver team that had lost four in a row - due in large part to major struggles from its defense.

The Cardinals now rank last in yards per game (220.7), and second-last in points scored (13.1). As such, McCoy's tenure with Arizona lasted just seven games, but he can't be entirely at fault for the struggles of this team.

Few could have expected running back David Johnson - fresh off a $39 million extension - to struggle this early in the season. Future Hall of Famer Larry Fitzgerald (26 catches, 255 yards and one touchdown), was going to slow down eventually, but the Cardinals couldn't have expected it to happen this season.

McCoy is still one of the NFL's most brilliant offensive minds and shouldn't be unemployed for long. He was in Denver where Peyton Manning returned to Pro Bowl form, following a career-threatening neck injury. After becoming head coach of the  Chargers, McCoy also revived Philip Rivers' career, following a couple of frustrating seasons from the franchise star.

Truth be told, few offensive coordinators are capable of fixing this wretched Arizona offense right now. Rosen is playing like a rookie, Johnson and Fitzgerald haven't been productive, and the offensive line is arguably the worst in football.

But someone had to be blamed for it, and McCoy was the unfortunate one here.
