Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz continues to recover from a torn ACL injury he suffered in December of last season, and the 25-year-old is optimistic that he'll be back in time for Week 1.

Appearing on SportsRadio WIP 94.1 (h/t NBC Sports Philadelphia's Dave Zangaro), Wentz admitted uncertainty if he'll be cleared to play in the season opener against the Atlanta Falcons, adding that "coaches and doctors that really have the final say," and it's going to be a close call.

"My knee feels really good. Rehab and everything has been going great," Wentz said. "Every day it feels a little bit better out there. I really like where I am at, so it's just a 'be patient' thing."

Wentz was the front-runner for the MVP Award before going down with a torn ACL. He had 3,296 passing yards for 33 touchdowns and just seven interceptions, winning 11 of his 13 starts.

After Wentz's injury, Tom Brady ran away with the MVP award, and many ruled out the Eagles from having a chance in the postseason. But backup Nick Foles - who had been in Philly from 2012-14 earlier in his career - came off the bench and led the Eagles to an "underdog" story for the ages.

The Eagles locked up the top seed in the conference and defeated the defending NFC Champion Atlanta Falcons in the Divisional Round, before dominating the Minnesota Vikings and their top-ranked defense in the NFC Championship game.

In Super Bowl 52, Foles tossed 373 yards and three touchdowns, helping the Eagles dethrone the Patriots and winning their first Lombardi Trophy in franchise history. Foles was named Super Bowl MVP, capping off one of the greatest underdog stories in recent memory.

Despite Foles' heroics, Wentz is undoubtedly the Eagles long-term answer at quarterback. They gave up a plethora of draft picks to get him second overall in 2016. But for now, Foles is a fine insurance option until Wentz is fully healthy and good to go.
