The Philadelphia Eagles are expected to have quarterback Carson Wentz back for their Week 3 contest with the Indianapolis Colts, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Wentz tore his ACL in Week 14 of last season against the Los Angeles Rams, and it was unknown for several weeks when he would return. But nine months after the gut-wrenching injury, Wentz should be good to go next week.

Schefter noted that Wentz still needs medical clearance, though sources said it should come sometime this week. Schefter added that some in the organization think he could have played Week 1 vs. the Atlanta Falcons, but the team obviously didn't want to rush their franchise player's return.

With Super Bowl MVP and hero Nick Foles leading the way for the time being, the Eagles know they have excellent insurance behind Wentz. Foles looked just as dominant as Wentz last season, so there was absolutely no reason to hurry the latter to return, not when their backup is playing like a Pro Bowler.

Wentz was piecing together a season that would have certainly led to him winning the NFL MVP award. He completed 60.2 percent of his passes for 3,296 yards, 33 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

The excellent campaign came to a crushing end when he tore his ACL after diving into the end zone in the aforementioned game against the Rams. The Eagles were widely considered an "underdog" despite being the NFC's top seed for the postseason, but Foles came off the bench and led the team to their first Super Bowl championship.

With Wentz close to returning, it'll be interesting to see what it means for Foles. The Eagles may want to keep him for insurance throughout 2018, or they could look to deal him at the deadline to a team that needs a quarterback.

That's for another day, however. For now, the big story is that the Eagles are about to get their franchise player back.
