The AFC-leading Kansas City Chiefs may receive a big-time boost soon, as head coach Andy Reid told reporters that Pro Bowl safety Eric Berry is set to practice for the first time since mid-August, via Herbie Teope of NFL.com.

It's great news for a Kansas City team that sits at 9-2, good enough for the top spot in the AFC right now. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes is enjoying an MVP-like season, leading an offensive juggernaut featuring the likes of Kareem Hunt, Travis Kelce and the speedy Tyreek Hill.

Per Teope, Berry has been on a day to day watch with the Chiefs over the last three months, and it's possible he'll get a chance to play against the Oakland Raiders this Sunday.

Kansas City surely needs their Pro Bowl safety back for the postseason, because the defense has been awful for most of 2018. Only the Cincinnati Bengals and Cleveland Browns have allowed more yards per game than the Chiefs (414.7).

On top of that, the Chiefs rank fifth-last in scoring defense, allowing a whopping 26.7 points per game. But when Berry is on the field, it changes the entire dynamic of their secondary, and the opponents' offensive gameplan changes significantly.

Berry ruptured his Achilles against the New England Patriots in Week 1 of last season, and the Kansas City defense was among the worst in the NFL. Berry had a fine performance that night, limiting the production of superstar tight end Rob Gronkowski.

But with Berry nearing a return, the Chiefs will finally get more help on that defensive side of the ball, and at the perfect time. Should Mahomes and co. win out, the Chiefs will wind up with the top seed in the AFC.

What This Means

The Chiefs have been a one-dimensional team for most of the 2018 season, but with Berry back in the fold, they now have the pieces on both sides of the ball to compete for a Super Bowl championship.
