The Green Bay Packers hosted a charity softball game on Saturday that started with Clay Matthews on the mound and ended with the star linebacker in the emergency room. Matthews was pitching in the game and one of the batters drove a line drive right to Matthews' face which immediately sent him to the ground.

Dave Schroeder, a sports anchor for WBAY in Green Bay, was able to capture video footage of the incident.

The game was immediately halted as Matthews was attended to. Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network later reported that Matthews was sent to the emergency room and was diagnosed with a broken nose. The situation could have been much worse, but all precautions were taken by sending Matthews to the hospital.

The softball game was being played at the home of the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers who are Class A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers. ESPN reports that Brett Favre, Donald Driver and Jordy Nelson have hosted the event in years prior. With Nelson being released this offseason, Matthews and Davante Adams co-hosted the game this year.

With the crowd likely worried about the status of their six-time Pro Bowler, Adams addressed the audience and updated Matthews' status.

Schroeder also said that the game resumed with a protective net in front of the mound similar to how MLB batting practice is set up.

This continues an eventful offseason for Matthews who had knee surgery right after the season ended in January. He appears to be fully healed from that, and despite notching 7.5 sacks last season, there was some speculation that he could have been cut alongside Jordy Nelson this offseason. But the Packers have elected to hold onto him for at least one more year and the 2018 season will be a contract year for him.
