The Cleveland Cavaliers have fired head coach Tyronn Lue after limping to a miserable 0-6 start to the 2018-19 season, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic.

Lue leaves Cleveland with a record of 128-83, having guided this team to its first ever NBA Championship in 2016. That year, the Cavaliers erased a 3-1 series deficit against the 73-win Golden State Warriors, bringing the city its first sports championship in 52 years.

The 41-year-old Lue also guided the Cavaliers to the NBA Finals in 2017 and 2018, but they were no match for the powerhouse Warriors. LeBron James signed with the Los Angeles Lakers in the offseason, leaving Cleveland without much star power and forcing Lue to try and squeeze out what he could from this roster.

But given the lack of roster depth and young talent, the Cavaliers were simply not going to compete this year. Lue obviously took the blame for the team's woes, but this organization has a long way to go before they can win again.

Lue was hired to replace the fired David Blatt midway through the 2105-16 season. The Cavaliers sat at 30-11, but the organization surprisingly decided it was time for a change. Cleveland went a mere 27-14 with Lue the rest of the way, but they wound up capturing the NBA Championship after years and years of heartbreak.

Three NBA Finals appearances in three years normally doesn't get a head coach fired, but this situation was an exception. The Cavaliers may have finally realized they need to strip the roster down and start selling off at the deadline. If they're ready for a full-on rebuild, then firing Lue does make plenty of sense.

Lue shouldn't have many problems finding another coaching gig soon. Few coaches can ever brag about taking their team to three consecutive NBA Finals, after all.
