CM Punk has been out of the wrestling business for over five years now, but fans couldn't help but get excited when he dropped a possible hint of joining AEW.

In a recent interview with ESPN.com, Punk revealed that Cody Rhodes sent him an offer to join AEW via text message. But Rhodes took to Twitter and said no offer was made - and that he thinks Punk will end up in WWE again.

Some might think that Rhodes was trying to hide AEW's negotiations with Punk, but according to Dave Meltzer (h/t Cageside Seats), it's all true. Punk indeed hasn't signed with AEW, and there aren't any indications that a deal will be reached.

It should be noted that CM Punk is still signed with UFC, although it's unknown if he'll fight for the promotion again. But whether or not he's willing to give wrestling another shot is anybody's guess. Injuries, sleeping problems and a near-fatal infection were factors in Punk's decision to retire from wrestling.

Punk left the WWE in Jan. 2014, informing Vince McMahon and co. about his intentions to go home. He never returned to the company again, and WWE officially "fired" him several months later - and the former main eventer vowed that he wouldn't wrestle again. Here we are over five years later, and there are no signs that he's about to move from that stance.

But Punk has been able to rest up his body for a while now, and perhaps he'll regain the desire to wrestle again. Whether that would be in AEW or WWE is anybody's guess, but for now, a return to wrestling isn't imminent for Punk.

What This Means

There have been plenty of rumors about Punk coming back to wrestling, but right now, there isn't a reason to think he's about to return. Punk doesn't seem ready to leave the UFC yet, either, so don't get your hopes up about a comeback to the squared circle right now.
