CM Punk might never appear in a real WWE ring ever again, but apparently there's a chance he could soon reprise his role in a virtual one.

Has there been anything more constant during the modern era of wrestling than the fans want for a CM Punk return? More than six years ago, Punk decided he'd had enough of the business and turned his back on it for good. However, no matter how many times Punk reiterates that he will never wrestle again, fans remain hopeful that one day, he will return, even if it's only for one match.

There is good reason for that. Throughout history, no matter how insistent wrestlers have been that they will never return to WWE, they almost always come back eventually. Bret Hart, Ultimate Warrior, Bruno Sammartino. Punk fans remain forever hopeful that he will one day be added to that long list of big stars who went back on their word.

On top of all that, in 2019, Punk did sort of return. Not to wrestle, but to act as a semi-regular guest on WWE Backstage. FOX was in charge of picking people for the show, so even though it was affiliated with the company, it wasn't a full WWE return. However, the latest rumor suggests that Punk is in the process of taking another step closer to the business he once cut all ties with.

According to Belt Fan Dan, the former WWE Champion has signed a deal to be a part of the company's next video game. Details are sparse. The tweet is one sentence long and Dan doesn't divulge where the information has come from. However, when asked by a follower for a little more information, Dan clarified that it will be in a console game, not just a cameo appearance in one of WWE's various video games.

It's still unclear which game Dan is referring to exactly due to the reshuffle of the WWE 2K calendar. WWE 2K21 has been canceled and there will not be a new game in the main series until fall 2021. WWE 2K Battlegrounds will be released later this year though, which appears to be the game Dan is referring to. However, if Punk agrees to appear in one game, it stands to reason that the deal will extend to more games in the future.
