Cody Rhodes had some choice words for Vince McMahon who referred to AEW as a company that sells "blood and guts" during a recent investors call.

During WWE's Second Quarter 2019 Earnings call from WWE HQ in Stamford, CT, Vince made some references to his new competitor in AEW without actually using their names. Referring to them as the "blood and guts" company, essentially, Vince said WWE wasn't going to stoop to that level to sell their product. WWE would be edgier but still PG.

Saying competition was good for everyone, Vince added, "... we're hoping that to the extent that they are competition that they don't continue on blood and guts and gory things that they have been doing. And I can't imagine, I can't speak for TNT but I can't imagine they would put up with that."

Of course, Executive Vice President Cody Rhodes had a response.

Through a promo made to promote the debut of AEW on TNT, Rhodes used Vince's own words against him. Saying:

"Recently there were some very public comments made about us, where we were referred to as 'blood and guts.' Blood and guts. And it was said with such a braggart candor that you would think the person saying it felt that they're bulletproof. But I wonder before they said it if they tasted their own words before they spit them out, because the entirety of our business is built on blood and guts. Every man or woman who ever stepped foot in the ring, regardless of race, color, creed, political affiliation, sexual identity, felt blood and guts and passion, because if we don't care, they don't care. So if you say we are blood and guts, I say you bet your ass we're blood and guts."

What This Means

After watching the promo video, it's easy to see how Cody saw an opportunity and it fueled his idea for a way to sell AEW on their new network. At the same time, if Vince saw this promo, he has to be kicking himself for walking right into a slap he should have seen coming.

Like wrestlers often say when they talk about the wrestling industry being built on the backs of performers who came before them and their sweat and tears that got them to the point WWE is at now, AEW will be happy to be known as a company built on blood and guts.

And, without even realizing it, Vince gave fans even more of a reason to like AEW.
