The Cleveland Cavaliers and guard JR Smith have mutually agreed that it's best they part ways and the team will explore the trade market in an attempt to move him.

The talented but controversial guard for the Cavaliers has not been a popular man within the organization after he blew a play in the NBA Finals last season, failing to realize the score of the game versus the Golden State Warriors. Ultimately, the clock ran out and the Cavs lost that game in overtime, eventually losing the series and their chance at a championship before LeBron James left town and took his talents to the Los Angeles Lakers.

Certainly, that single play is not the sole reason Smith is without a spot in the Cavs rotation but it likely was a factor in the team's desire not to keep him around. Add to that, Smith called out the 2-13 Cavs, suggesting they were tanking and had no desire to win this season, thus the organization felt it best to simply move on.

The team announced the news in a statement on Tuesday:

"The Cleveland Cavaliers announced today that JR Smith will no longer be with team as the organization works with JR and his representation regarding his future. The organization wishes JR and his family well and appreciates and thanks him for his contributions in the community, to the team and his role in the 2016 NBA Championship."

The Athletic's Joe Vardon noted this breakup is "amicable" and that Smith explained he doesn't want to be bought out due to the message it sends and his legacy in Cleveland, but that he views a trade in a different light. If the Cavs have no desire to be competitive and they don't want him, he has no desire to go through a rebuild, meaning he's best served to play somewhere else.

This isn't the first time Smith has suggested a trade was the right decision for his future. He said as much in a media conference and interview with ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski. When asked if he was looking for a trade, Smith responded "Yeah". When asked if he's expressed that feeling toward the organization, he responded, "They know... I mean, they don't want me here, so they obviously know."

What This Means

Smith is under contract for $14.72 million this season and has a $15.68 million salary (only $3.87 million is guaranteed) for 2019-20. Any team that takes him on will need to work with the Cavs on sorting out those contract details.
