As the Miami Dolphins finish up another disappointing and non-playoff year, it sounds like the front office is ready to start afresh and move on from 30-year-old quarterback Ryan Tannehill.

Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reported that the team is "prepared to move on from Tannehill," after this season, rather than pay out the next two years of Tannehill's contract. The seventh-year signal-caller is owed $19 million in 2019 and 2020, per Jackson.

Even though Tannehill expressed his desire to remain in Miami (per Jackson), the team seems bent on moving him out (via trade or release), to save $13.2 million in cap space, according to Jackson.

The decision to move on from Tannehill won't be a difficult one for the Dolphins. They've only made the playoffs once under his watch (2016). Tannehill missed all of 2017 with a torn ACL, missed a trio in 2017 and was held out of action for five games this year.

Though he's a lovable teammate and has delivered some big wins in the past, Tannehill is ageing, prone to injury and simply overpaid. The Dolphins have just one winning season under Tannehill. The team has been mired in mediocrity for almost two full decades now, and changes are needed.

Even though he's gotten a lot out of a very flawed roster, head coach Adam Gase is no lock to return next season. Not only that, but the team is expected to fire VP of football operations Mike Tannenbaum, per Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald.

The Dolphins started out 3-0 and were two games ahead of the New England Patriots for first in the AFC East. After a blowout road loss to the Patriots in Week 4, the Dolphins have fallen apart big time, going 3-8 since.

What This Means

There will be a handful of starting quarterbacks available in the offseason. The Dolphins could pursue somebody like Nick Foles, Teddy Bridgewater or Blake Bortles, who are all expected to move on from their respective teams this offseason.

The Dolphins need to start afresh and find a new quarterback to build around for the long run. Tannehill has had his chance, but there's no way they can keep rolling with somebody who's only slightly above average, at best.
