New England Patriots safety Duron Harmon was arrested by officials in Costa Rica on Friday for trying to smuggle 58 grams of marijuana into the country, according to the La Nación newspaper (h/t Pro Football Talk).

Harmon was briefly detained, and then sent back to the U.S. It is unknown if the Patriots will discipline Harmon (or even release him), but he certainly could face a suspension from the NFL.

The 27-year-old has avoided troubles with the law through his NFL career, so his "first offense" could lead to a minor punishment from the league. Harmon is a two-time Super Bowl champion with the Patriots, and it dubbed by the media as "The Closer," because of his clutch interceptions.

Harmon intercepted Joe Flacco in the final minutes of the 2014 AFC Divisional Round, helping the Patriots barely squeak by the Baltimore Ravens. New England would go on to win Super Bowl 48 over the Seattle Seahawks.

On top of that, Harmon made the game-saving interception in the end zone of the Pats' Week 15 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, which was overshadowed by a controversial non-catch ruling.

Harmon also made a big interception late in the first half off Nick Foles in Super Bowl 52, though the Patriots wound up losing 41-33. Last offseason, he was given a four-year extension worth a max value of $20 million.

This isn't the first time a Patriots player has had a rather strange story involving marijuana. In 2016, former Pats pass-rusher Chandler Jones had a bad reaction after smoking synthetic marijuana.

In a state of panic, he went over to the Foxborough Police station for help, showing up in only sweatpants. Jones was taken to the hospital and released shortly after. He was not arrested and faced no discipline from the league, as he didn't commit any crimes.

It could be a while until the NFL conducts an investigation and leaves a decision on Harmon. But given the strict policy implemented by head coach Bill Belichick, it's possible Harmon may have already played his last snap for the Patriots.
