Widespread speculation was Eric Bischoff and Paul Heyman would be starting new roles as Executive Directors for WWE this week. One of the key people on the SmackDown side was missing — Eric Bischoff.
We all know Paul Heyman was at Raw. He showed off his client Brock Lesnar as the new Universal Champion. Thus, it makes sense to assume he had a hand in the creative direction of the show despite Raw planning a reunion show for next week. But, as Bischoff was expected to start as new Executive Director for SmackDown Live after the Extreme Rules pay-per-view, it sounds like he wasn't even at the show.
Dave Meltzer reported on F4Wonline.com that Bischoff was not backstage for Tuesday's SmackDown episode from Worcester, MA as the show got underway. Not being there wasn't automatically a reason to assume Bischoff wasn't part of the production but Meltzer went on to add that Bischoff has had zero impact on the SmackDown script.
So too, speculation was that Bischoff was not involved in any creative meetings for the show.
What This Means
It is unclear as to whether or not this will prove to be Bischoff having less involvement in creative than Heyman may have on Raw or simply the fact that Bischoff moved his family across the country to Connecticut this past week to be closer to WWE HQ. If the latter, it makes sense not to rush him into creative meetings and have him write a show while his focus wasn't 100% on the WWE product.
When Bischoff will assume his role as Executive Director and have a big hand in creative is unclear. For all we know, this could be Bischoff asking for a little extra time to get familiar with the product before he jumps in with both feet.
