The New England Patriots are signing veteran wide receiver Eric Decker to a one-year contract, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The Decker signing comes a day after the Patriots released wideout Jordan Matthews, who's battling a bad hamstring injury. New England is thin at the receiver position, with Julian Edelman failing a drug test and being suspended for the first four games of 2018.

Malcolm Mitchell, who missed all of 2017 with a knee injury, has been the subject of trade rumors and is unlikely to stay in New England this season. The Patriots also traded Brandin Cooks to the Los Angeles Rams in the offseason, while Danny Amendola signed with the Miami Dolphins.

The last five seasons have been extremely up-and-down for the 31-year-old Decker. With Peyton Manning as his quarterback, Decker posted consecutive 1,000-yard seasons in 2012 and 2013, helping the Broncos reach Super Bowl 48 - where they'd lose to the Seattle Seahawks.

In 2014, Decker signed a five-year deal worth $36.25 million with the New York Jets. He  had his third 1,000-yard season in 2015, as the Jets finished with a 10-6 record and barely missed the postseason. However, a shoulder injury limited Decker to three games in 2016, and he was released in the following offseason.

Decker then joined the Titans on a one-year deal, but he finished with a mere 54 receptions for 563 yards and just one touchdown. The Patriots are banking on a resurgent year for Decker, who has a month to learn the offensive playbook before the 2018 season begins.

Decker simply struggled in Tennessee's run-first offense and wasn't able to stay healthy with the Jets. But he gets a chance to play with one of the best quarterbacks in history, and he could very well have a career year.
