The MMA and boxing world is all abuzz with the news that Dana White and UFC commentator Joe Rogan publicly admitted that Floyd Mayweather was looking to cash in on a huge potential money-making deal by joining UFC for a multi-fight contract worth potentially $1 billion.
Since the news was released, it appears Mayweather has tried to calm the storm and Conor McGregor (definitely an opponent for Mayweather if this did, in fact, happen) has jumped all over it calling Mayweather names for backing off, but, rumors are still out there and fans everywhere would love to see round two between the now retired boxer and the Irish MMA personality.
But, is Mayweather joining UFC and the world of MMA a good idea? Here are five reasons we believe it would be the dumbest thing Mayweather could ever do.
5. Ruin His Legacy
Most people believe that Mayweather would get crushed in an MMA fight. While he's incredibly skilled as a puncher and boxer, what skill does he have in any of the martial arts forms? Can he wrestle on the ground? Can he block the advances of a shooting McGregor?
If Mayweather gets worked in this fight, the only thing he'll have to show for it is a pile of money. His reputation as one of the best fighters in the world would be severely tarnished.
4. He Can't Stack the Deck
One of the criticisms of Floyd Mayweather is that he's spent much of his career stacking the deck in his favor when it comes to his fights. He's faced opponents past their prime, he's taken on insufficient competition to pad his 50-0 record and he's waited to cash in when the opportunities suit him.
This fight means Mayweather has no favorable outcomes he can use to his advantage. He would legitimately need to beat his opponent in an MMA fight and that's not going to be easy to do.
3. UFC Fighters Won't Like This
There is a thing about MMA fighters and non-MMA guys coming into their world that doesn't sit well with many of the competitors. While they understand it will draw huge ratings and be an attraction, there be a huge variety of fighters wanting to face Mayweather and he'll get abuse from all angles.
He wouldn't just be facing it from McGregor (one of the most notorious trash-talkers in sports), Mayweather would be getting it from tons of MMA fighters wanting to cash in on things.
2. He's 40 Years Old
It's not unheard of for an older competitor to fight in the MMA, but UFC is primarily a younger athlete's sport. When that older competitor has no MMA training, it's especially difficult to envision Mayweather would even stand a chance.
It's one thing for a boxer to get back into boxing shape after taking significant time off. It's another for a boxer who's been retired for months to get into MMA shape at the age of 40. The advertised bout would likely be delayed over and over which would drive fans crazy.
1. It Would Be The Ugliest Fight in MMA History
While cars would line up around the block and pay thousands of dollars to attend the fight live or pay-per-view records would be shattered. Even people who would swear off watching the show would watch. But, for what? Merely the spectacle because it would be the ugliest fight in MMA history.
Whomever Mayweather would take on would ground the boxer. If they didn't do so quickly, they'd do so after teasing and dancing around for minutes without a lock up. Fans would immediately regret spending their money to see such a disaster.
