Former WWE referee Drake Wuertz has announced that he will be returning to the ring at an upcoming independent show in Orlando, Florida.

Wuertz took to Instagram to reveal that he's coming out of retirement to participate as a competitor for the first time in seven years.

"Back to my 'Younger' days, Wuertz captioned a flyer promoting the event. "Returning to in-ring action for a great cause on June 26th in O-Town," he continued.

The event at which Wuertz is scheduled to appear is titled  ‘Take Down Trafficking," and is described as a "A Benefit for Bikers Against Trafficking."

Based on his social media activity and recent appearances at local council meetings in Seminole County, Florida, it appears that Wuertz fell victim to the Q-Anon conspiracy cult. Wrestling journalist David Bixenspan has written extensively about Wuertz's increasingly bizarre political beliefs, and has documented numerous examples of Wuertz publicly making demonstrably false claims in public.

In April of this year, Fightful's Sean Ross Sapp reported that Wuertz had been suspended by WWE, and that his duties within the company had diminished. Darryl Sharma reportedly replaced Wuertz as NXT's head referee during this time.

As you may recall, Wuertz was released by WWE last week after a seven year stint with the company as a referee. No official reason was given for Wuertz's release, but numerous employees have been fired by WWE in recent weeks due to budget cuts initiated by the loss of revenue caused by the Covis-19 pandemic.

WrestlingINC recently reported that Wuertz began reaching out to independent promotions for potential work almost immediately after being released by WWE.

Prior to joining WWE, Wuertz was a prolific deathmatch wrestler who performed under the name "Drake Younger" for multiple independent promotions including Combat Zone Wrestling, IWA Mid-South, EVOLVE, Dragon Gate USA, Chikara, and Pro Wrestling Guerrilla. His last match took place in 2014. He retired from in-ring competition and joined WWE later that year.
