In a memorable performance, and finishing with an 8-under total, Francesco Molinari spent most of Sunday cranking out pars to outlast the field and win the 2018 British Open Tournament. Molinari has become the first-ever Italian-born player to win a major in golf.

The 147th Open Championship at Carnoustie was a tournament full of drama. Tiger Woods was in the running to win the tournament after shooting a 66 on Saturday, only to falter on the back nine on Sunday. The leaderboard was packed after a gorgeous Saturday where low scores were the norm, and, while all eyes were on Woods to start the day, Molinari quietly went bogey-free over his final 37 holes to outlast every other player who packed the leaderboard.

Of Molinari's win, there were a number of golfers not surprised to see him take home the title. Calling his round on Sunday "flawless", Woods said Molinari played beautiful golf and Molinari's playing partner from earlier in the week, Justin Thomas, said, "What a round by @F_Molinari. Played with him Thursday-Friday, not surprised! Guy is the hottest player on the planet currently. Bogey-free out there today is a championship round."

Others called Molinari's performance unflappable. He is in the middle of one of golf's hottest runs, his putting is vastly improved and he's now considered one of the most dangerous players in the world.

When accepting the trophy, Molinari started by saying, "What a week." He thanked his family back home in Italy, thanked his coaches and told the runners-up that unfortunately "there's only one winner in golf, this time it's me", but each had given him fantastic competition.

Congratulations go out to Francesco Molinari. The fact that anyone can go 37 holes without dropping a shot at Carnoustie deserves to be called the Champion Golfer of the Year.
