After fighting for a long time to obtain the rights to his name and character, Gangrel finally has the legal rights to everything Gangrel.

Most people know Gangrel as a former WWE talent and leader of the Brood faction that included Edge and Christian. But, Gangrel has been in the independent wrestling scene and teaching the future stars of the business much longer than he'd ever been a part of WWE. To him, his name is much more than just a character he played while a member of the largest sports entertainment company in the world.

He made the announcement that after years of struggling with red tape, he finally has full marketing rights to his in-ring moniker. Gangrel — whose real name is David Heath — wrote, "I am very proud and thankful to be able to announce after all the years of my wrestling under the name Gangrel, the United States of America trademark office has granted me the full trademark rights to the Gangrel name as well as international rights." He added that from now on, he'll be Gangrel and licensing the name out, taking advantage of his right to sell his own apparel, hot sauce and beer that he plans to take to market.

What This Means

To WWE fans, not much. The chances of Gangrel making a return to the company are slim, if not for the odd one-off appearance at an event like the Royal Rumble. For Heath, owning the name Gangrel means everything.

There are few wrestlers who have made professional wrestling a career as long as Gangrel has. That he now owns his character and can do what he needs to in order to profit off the use of the name on the indie scene allows him to make the money he's worked decades to earn.
