The Rockets have confirmed that they will be parting ways with veteran forward Carmelo Anthony after just 10 games into his Houston career.

The 10-time All-Star joined the team in the summer after spending a season with the Oklahoma City Thunder and, from the onset, doubts over his fit in Mike D'Antoni's system loomed.

It was always going to be a difficult adjustment period for both the player and the team, yet no one imagined Houston would have gotten off to such a poor start, considering they won a league-high 65 games last season.

Rumors of the team's intention to cut the player surfaced on the weekend and, although the Rockets tried to play it down, very reputable sources insisted that the forward's 10th game in a Rockets uniform would be his last.

On Thursday, Rockets general manager Daryl Morey announced that the player's time in Houston is up, claiming that any other outcome would have been unfair to him.

“After much internal discussion, the Rockets will be parting ways with Carmelo Anthony and we are working toward a resolution,” Morey said, via the Rockets' official website.

“Carmelo had a tremendous approach during his time with the Rockets and accepted every role head coach Mike D’Antoni gave him. The fit we envisioned when Carmelo chose to sign with the Rockets has not materialized, therefore we thought it was best to move on as any other outcome would have been unfair to him.”

Meanwhile, D'Antoni has admitted that Anthony simply wasn't a fit in Houston and their playing style did not suit his strengths.

"It’s a puzzle," he explained. "Pieces are different for every puzzle. This one wasn’t fitting together. It wasn’t from lack of trying. It just didn’t work out. We just had to see how things work out .

"The way we play probably wasn’t conducive to his game. He was trying to make the necessary sacrifices. It wasn’t fair to him as a Hall of Fame player to play in a way that wasn’t good for him, wasn’t good for us."

What This Means

While things didn't work out for Melo in Houston, there are plenty of teams who reckon the veteran still has a lot to offer.

Over the next few days, it's likely that many calls will be made over the player's signature. And, although there's no indication as to where he will end up as yet, the Lakers, Heat and 76ers have all been credited with an interest.
