Jim Duggan is an icon in the wrestling business, and even now when he returns to the WWE, the Universe pop for his iconic two-by-four and they chant “U.S.A” non-stop. But in a recent interview with SunLive, he spoke about how he got his nickname, ‘Hacksaw.’

It’s not a hugely entertaining or interesting backstory behind the iconic name, but it’s a simple one, and he explains that he got it from his football days: "It's actually from my football days. I used to hack my way through the wedge. So we tried Hacksaw and it kind of stuck.” It may have been an organic nickname, and in wrestling, the best things usually are organic, so Duggan better thank his football days for the moniker, as it’s still genuinely one of the best we’ve seen in the WWE, from one of the most iconic performers that the company has ever seen.

Wrestling is best when it’s natural and organic, but it’s also the home of some of the craziest and most nonsensical things you’ve ever seen, and as Duggan says, “People are like, 'You're Hacksaw Duggan and you carry a two-by-four.' I'm like, 'It's wrestling, it doesn't have to make sense.'"

In comparison to the likes of Mankind, The Undertaker and Broken Matt Hardy, his character was the furthest thing from crazy. But it was still a unique character from a really good professional wrestler, and it’s really no surprise that he has remained one of the WWE Universe’s favorite legends throughout time.

So what do you guys think? Do you enjoy seeing Hacksaw Jim Duggan back every now and then? What are some of the best nicknames in wrestling history that you can think of? As always, let us know all your thoughts and ideas in the comment section below.
