New Impact Wrestling executive vice president Scott D'Amore promised major changes to turn the company around. One way of doing that would be to add a past WWE legend with two World Heavyweight Championships and a Royal Rumble victory on his resume.

Well, it looks like that just might happen. According to Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Radio (subscription required), Rey Mysterio may be close to joining Impact Wrestling, and the company is working on having him appear at this week's tapings.

That just about dashes any hopes of Mysterio coming back to the WWE. Last month, he did an interview with ESPN and admitted he was "open" to rejoining the company, wanting to "tell them (his fans), goodbye in a proper way."

Mysterio also said "Never say never," when asked about appearing at this year's Royal Rumble. But it looks like now is a good time to say "never," since he's on the verge of joining a rival promotion.

A potential future Hall of Famer, Mysterio joined the WWE in 2002 and left after his contract expired in Feb. 2015. He then spent two years in the Mexican Lucha Libre promotion, AAA, and also worked briefly in Lucha Underground. Mysterio has most recently worked in the independent circuit.

Impact Wrestling also recently brought in Alberto Del Rio (now going by Alberto El Patron), who could become their top star if Ethan Carter and Bobby Lashley leave soon, which has been rumored.

There's no doubting that Rey Mysterio would provide a major boost to Impact's roster. With his incredible in-ring skills and popularity among the children audience, Mysterio could easily become one of their main event talents.

Mysterio won two World Heavyweight Championships plus one WWE championship, as well as four tag team titles, two Intercontinental Championships, and three Cruiserweight Championships. The resume speaks for itself, and Impact Wrestling may have just hit a huge home run with this pending addition.
