On the most recent episode of Something Else To Wrestle With, Bruce Prichard revealed a funny and interesting story about how the Intercontinental Title came to be in WWE. It is a story that proves some of the most iconic pieces of wrestling history can just sort appear out of nowhere.

The legend goes that Vince McMahon Sr. wasn't a fan of the North American Championship that Ted DiBiase was currently holding when he made his first run in New York back in 1979. He lost that title to Pat Patterson, who, at the time, was the South African Champion. Knowing that he didn't want a South African Champion or a North American Champion, Vince Sr. decided he needed something bigger than both titles, but not quite as big as a world title. His compromise was the Intercontinental Title which they would suggest Patterson won in a "tournament" in Rio De Janeiro.

What makes this so interesting, is that there really wasn't a tournament, but that it was merely a storyline to give the Intercontinental Championship an origin story. That origin story being based in Re De Janiero was chosen for one specific, and frankly petty reason.

Bruce Prichard said, "so, they had a tournament in Rio De Janiero and the reason the tournament was held in Rio De Janiero was because the winner of that tournament, that never actually happened, was the one and only Pat Patterson, who was the first Intercontinental Champion. And the reason they picked Rio De Janiero was because Pat couldn't say Rio De Janiero."

Bruce goes on to do a goofy impersonation of Pat trying to say the name and finally adds that Vince found it absolutely hilarious that Pat couldn't say the words. So much so that he would have Patterson do color commentary just to ask him where the tournament was held.

Prichard would suggest that because Patterson couldn't say the words, he would get flustered and just refer to where he won the championship as "Rio" to which McMahon would find endless humor in. The entire origin of the Intercontinental belt was a rib against Patterson and while the title has gone on to be one of the greatest in the history of professional wrestling, the history behind its creation is merely the prank of the creator of WWE as we know it today with one of his good buddies.
