A huge weekend for professional wrestling is coming up in just a few weeks, and not just for WWE fans. Yes, WrestleMania weekend is a major spectacle in and of itself, but other promotions and their stars won’t let the “Showcase of the Immortals” hog the entire spotlight. In Ring of Honor, a former world champion has set his sights on adding a new belt to his list of accomplishments, and he plans on doing so on the same weekend WWE’s flagship show is going down.

Supercard of Honor, which has taken place every WrestleMania weekend since 2006, is set to showcase some of the best matches of the year for Ring of Honor fans, and one such match has Jay Lethal teaming up with former NJPW Heavyweight Champion Hiroshi Tanahashi to take on the Briscoes for the ROH Tag Team Championships.

For all of his championships and accolades, stretching back to 2002, Lethal has yet to win the ROH tag team belts. The match was recently announced on the Ring of Honor website, and pairs the two New Japan alumni up for the second time in ROH. The Briscoes won the championships for the ninth time several days ago and aim to retain those belts come Supercard of Honor.

Jay Lethal won his first big title in 2002 while working for Jersey All-Pro Wrestling, and the vast majority of his titles since have come from singles competition. Tanahashi as well has held mainly singles gold, which makes for an interesting dichotomy between them and the Briscoes. To be fair though, the two have teamed up once before in ROH, and have also developed a level of respect for each other during their respective tenures in Japan.

The tag team title match is building up to be one of the most exciting bouts on the card thanks to the enormous talents of the competitors involved. One thing that it has going against it though is the lack of cohesion in the thrown together team. It remains to be seen if they can come together in the name of competition and win the belts. Either way, it should be quite the spectacle that will only add to the already stacked Supercard.
