The Los Angles Chargers placed their new safety Jaylen Watkins on injured reserve due to a torn ACL in Saturday's preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks. This loss will mess up Bolts’ plans and kills the 26-year-old's chances to play a season in a starting position for the first time in his career.

The injury of the defensive player occurred in the second half of Chargers’ 24-14 victory over the Seahawks—this being his first start for the team—when teammate Melvin Ingram fell onto him. Watkins will miss the rest of the season just when his career was beginning to take off after spending two years with practice squads and winning a Super Bowl ring last season with the Philadelphia Eagles. He became a Charger this offseason signing a one-year deal which gave him the opportunity of his life. Over the last four seasons playing for the Eagles, he played in 36 games but started only five. However, this year the former Philadelphia Eagles player was competing for the starting job in the Bolts' secondary, leading the contending after a solid preseason.

Meanwhile, the L.A. team keeps struggling to try to come out of this preseason with a healthy team which has suffered three other players losses so far—the former San Diego team entered the offseason with one of the deepest rosters in the league. The tight ends Hunter Henry and Austin Roberts suffered an ACL injury as well and on the defensive side, the cornerback Jason Verrett—a key player for the franchise—tore his Achilles tendon before even the training camp officially started.

With the 2017 Super Bowl champion out of the roster, the Chargers need to find a way to strengthen a position that was already feeble even before this loss. Either the rookie Derwin James, Jahleel Adae or Rayshawn Jenkins—who started the first preseason game —will be filling the gap that Watkins left. Although the team has already brought another contender for the starting position, the Californian franchise claimed undrafted rookie safety Micah Hannemann off waivers from the Cleveland Browns.
