Kyrie Irving was supposed to be 'the guy' on the current Boston Celtics roster. However, the new kid on the block is looking to take over, with Jayson Tatum showing the makings of a true superstar.

The two players are waging a war, whether they are aware or not, to become the Celtics' focal point and are even going at each other in practice.

Reporters who attended the team's Monday scrimmage were treated to an intriguing scene as the star duo went one-on-one after the training session ahead of Tuesday's match against the Detroit Pistons.

The former Duke Blue Devils are first and third at the top of the team's scoring ladder so far this season - Tatum leads all chasers - so it was likely that buckets would fall, and fall they did.

The videos weren't long enough to reveal a winner and the players seemed evenly matched, with Tatum's height and shooting proving the difference maker for him, while Kyrie's speed and handles gave him an advantage on offence.

The Celtics were able to reach within a game of the NBA Finals at the end of last season, with both Irving and Gordon Hayward out injured, as the likes of Tatum, Terry Rozier, Marcus Smart and Marcus Morris shocked the Eastern Conference with their gutsy performances.

Things seem to have slowed down a bit now that the formerly injured pair are back in the lineup but the Celtics are still looking like contenders

In possibly more important news, Irving has gotten rid of his afro and is back to sporting the flat, sharp cut.

Fans would be right to anticipate a much-improved Kyrie, considering his best years in the league came about when his hair was kept short.

Coach Brad Stevens, for one, has approved of his point guard's fresh trim. But could the Celtics really be better off for it? They will certainly hope so.
