Just when things appeared to be looking up for Jeff Hardy — a successful recovery from substance abuse problems, a well-received return to the WWE alongside his brother Matt, a Tag Team Championship win at WrestleMania, and most recently, good progress on his rotator cuff injury — it looks like the Charismatic Enigma might be back on the slippery slope again. Hardy was arrested and charged with driving while impaired following a car accident, and while it remains unsure if WWE will take action in the light of the incident, photos of Hardy’s wrecked car emerged yesterday.

As previously noted by Wrestling Inc., the incident took place on Saturday, around 8:11 p.m. on Concord Parkway in Concord, North Carolina, as Hardy’s 2016 Cadillac CTS-V struck a 105-foot-long guardrail after running off the road, spinning 90 degrees to the left toward the northbound lanes. He was then arrested after allegedly registering a blood alcohol level of .25 on the Breathalyzer, or three times above the limit. Less than an hour after being arrested, he was released, though he is due in court on April 16, 2018, in Cabarrus County, N.C., with his license suspended 30 days.

On Monday, the WWE issued a statement to Wrestling Inc., stressing that Jeff Hardy is “responsible for his own personal actions,” and that the company is working with local police officials to get more details on the case.

Hardy’s substance abuse issues have been very well-documented in a pro wrestling career that’s lasted close to 25 years. He first left the WWE in 2002 due to these “personal demons,” and incurred two Wellness Policy strikes before leaving a second time in 2009. These violations have apparently carried over, despite the last one taking place close to a decade before The Hardy Boyz’s return at WrestleMania 33. There’s also Hardy’s infamous match against Sting at TNA Victory Road 2011, where he was obviously under the influence and in no condition to wrestle, which led to an unsatisfying minute-and-a-half match won by the Stinger. That incident, however, served as the impetus for Hardy to turn his life around and stop abusing drugs and alcohol.

At this point, we're not sure if Jeff Hardy is abusing anything harder than alcohol, or how WWE will take action following this obvious setback to the man's sobriety. But we hope that Hardy gets the help he may need, and that this recent incident does not end up seriously derailing what has been a brilliant, arguably Hall of Fame-worthy career.
