Legendary WWE commentator Jim Ross has confirmed that he will be leaving the company when his contract hits its expiry on March 29.

Ross, who joined the promotion in 1993, was speaking on The Jim Ross Report this week when he revealed that the decision was a mutual one which was shaken upon by himself and WWE chairman Vince McMahon.

After joining in 1993, Ross worked for the WWE right through to 2013 nearly uninterrupted. He would gain the reputation of being one of the best play-by-play commentators of all time, having risen to become the voice of the WWE and its Attitude era during his first stint.

Ross left the company in 2013 and would take up some work for New Japan Pro Wrestling and AXS TV. He continued to do so even after making a return in 2017.

The Hall of Famer lost his wife that year, following an accident in March, but would go on to famously call the WrestleMania 33 main event featuring Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns. He also called the Mae Young Classic alongside Lita and has been working with the WWE on an on-and-off basis since coming back.

Despite not being a regular feature on TV as of late, Ross maintains he wants to continue working when he leaves the WWE.

"I'm 67, I still feel I can get the job done doing wrestling play-by-play, and I want to explore that opportunity and possibility," he declared (h/t Post Wrestling). "I'll be moving on in a positive way; nothing but good things to say about everyone involved.

"You know, I have my critics in WWE, as we all do, as people do when you're there for very long. It's a very unique community, and I have no regrets. The smartest thing I ever did was come to work for Vince McMahon in 1993."

He also ended by saying: “I don’t think I’ll be out of work long.”

What This Means

Ross has plenty of options, with All Elite Wrestling thought to be his most likely destination. But other opportunities lie in Ring of Honor, Impact Wrestling and Major League Wrestling, among other promotions.

If he does join AEW, it could go a long way in increasing the brand's popularity given his status and the respect he's gained in the wrestling business over his many years therein.
