Wantaway Minnesota Timberwolves forward Jimmy Butler has asked head coach Tom Thibodeau to place some more trust in his players.

Sounds like a big ask coming from a man who has wreaked havoc around the team in recent times, taking jabs at every member of the Timberwolves' organization he could find.

But, with the new season now underway, Butler would like for his coach to take a back seat and let him play.

The shooting guard scored 23 points along with seven rebounds and three assists in his side's opening loss to the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday. And the team put up a good fight, bowing out 112-108 against the DeMar DeRozan-led side but limiting them to 43 percent shooting from the field and forcing 12 turnovers.

They bounced back with a convincing win over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday night, beating last season's finalists 131-123 as Butler led the way with 33 points.

The 28-year-old will look to make things work with Thibodeau and the rest of the team while he remains in a T-Wolves uniform. And, having observed a more relaxed Thibs as of late, he has urged the coach to remain that way.

"Just hoop, I told them, and I think that I can get Thibs to relax a little bit," the player told The Athletic's Shams Charania after Wednesday's loss. "He's never going to say anything about offense as long as you go down there and play with effort on the defensive end and get a couple stops.

"It's whenever you're not getting stops when he starts yelling. I think Thibs has calmed down a lot, and guys are playing with effort. It's never about offense. We're always going to score enough points. It's all about getting stops.

"Thibs didn't exert as much energy as he always does the past few weeks. He needs to do that more: Sit down, take the load off and trust your guys to get a W."

The T-Wolves are believed to be still looking for a suitable trade for Butler. And team owner Glen Taylor has admitted that the player will not re-sign with the team when he goes into free agency next year.
