After spending nearly a half-year without a title belt, Jinder Mahal prevailed at WrestleMania 34 to win his first United States Championship - reigning supremacy over Bobby Roode, Randy Orton and Rusev.

The Modern Day Maharaja was able to score a pinfall on Roode, ending a highly-entertaining match that only lasted 8:15. With the victory, Mahal ends Orton's brief 28-day reign as the United States Champion.

This was Mahal's first singles match on the Grandest Stage of Them All, as he had previously competed in two Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royals. He was the runner-up last year, as New England Patriots NFL star Rob Gronkowski attacked Mahal to help real-life friend Mojo Rawley win the event instead.

Mahal had received a main event push last year, defeating Orton at Backlash to win his first championship on the main roster. But AJ Styles defeated Mahal to end his 170-day reign this past November, and The Modern Day Maharaja's push as a main eventer slowly came to an end.

Mahal had been challenging for the championship since December, entering an eight-man tournament to decide the winner after Dolph Ziggler "relinquished" the belt. Mahal reached the finals, but was defeated by Roode earlier in January.

The United States Championship is now on its fourth holder since Ziggler won it at the Clash of Champions pay-per-view on Dec. 17. Dating back to the beginning of 2017, the title has now changed hands 12 times. The longest reign over that time frame belongs to Chris Jericho, who held it for 83 days.

It has appeared as though WWE officials have given up (or at least delayed), making Mahal a main event star. But he's an excellent heel that has done a fine job in the mid-card division, so it makes sense to give him a reign with the prestigious United States Championship.
