There are conflicting reports about whether or not the Philadelphia Flyers have hired Joel Quenneville as their new head coach.

Citing sources, Dave Isaac of the Post Courier initially reported that the Flyers were going to fire head coach Dave Hakstol, and that Quenneville was going to accept their offer to take over behind the bench.

However, Andy Strickland of Fox Sports Midwest Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer reported that Quenneville has not taken the Flyers' coaching role.

It should be noted that teams often deny reports regarding significant news like this. Quenneville going to Philly isn't a done deal by any means, but just because the organization denies it, that doesn't mean the Flyers aren't going to make a change behind the bench.

The Flyers were embarrassed by the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday, falling 5-1 and getting swept on the western Canadian road trip. The Flyers sit at 12-15-4, having lost four in a row and have lost seven of their last 10 games.

Philadelphia already fired general manager Ron Hextall and hired former Minnesota Wild GM Chuck Fletcher to replace him. Fletcher hasn't made any big moves yet, but certainly hiring the man who sits second all-time in wins (890), could absolutely be a franchise changer.

Despite leading the Chicago Blackhawks to three Stanley Cups and nine consecutive playoff appearances from 2009-17, Quenneville was fired after a 6-6-3 start to the season. Chicago has sunk to the bottom of the standings since his firing, further showing how much value he has on the team.

What This Means

The Flyers have been mired in mediocrity since losing to the Blackhawks in the 2010 Stanley Cup Final. This organization has got to start making changes if they want to return to Cup contention, which is why hiring Quenneville makes all the sense in the world.

We should have a good idea by Monday afternoon if the coaching place is really going to take place or not.
