Vince McMahon might not be a fan of what AEW is doing, but John Cena believes the emergence of a new promotion is a good thing for WWE.

The hype surrounding AEW has died down a little over the course of the past month or so. That's likely due to a combination of the company having little to announce and it being WrestleMania season. The eyes of the wrestling world are very much on WWE and the rest of the action taking place in New York over the course of this weekend.

However, once WrestleMania is out of the way, attention might well return to wrestling's newest promotion. Its first event, Double Or Nothing will be taking place in May after all. While matches have already begun to take shape for the Las Vegas show, there will still be a lot to learn about AEW and its roster between now and it taking place.

What we won't know until Double Or Nothing and the announcement of AEW's TV deal is how big an operation the company really is. At the very least, it appears as if it will act as competition with WWE when it comes to competing for talent. That will greatly annoy Vince McMahon, but John Cena is welcoming the emergence of AEW. He said as much while speaking to Chris Van Vliet recently.

"You can say what you want about [AEW] being competition or not competition, I view any form of digestible entertainment as competition because your eyes can go elsewhere," Cena explained. That's a view he and Mr. McMahon share. Cena also stated that competition either forces you to step up or step aside, adding that it has also improved the state of the wrestling economy.

AEW will not compete with WWE right off the bat, or perhaps ever. Neither should that be their ultimate aim. Trying to do what WWE does better than WWE does it is setting yourself up for failure. What AEW needs to do is give wrestling fans a suitable alternative to WWE in a world that is already full of different genres of wrestling. What sets AEW apart is the minds and the money it has as backing.
