John Cena Sr. has expressed a belief that WWE made the correct decision in letting Billie Kay and Peyton Royce go as part of their cuts last month. The female stars were released in mid-April, much to the surprise of many fans, some of whom are probably still seething over the decision.
The older Cena, however, reckons it was a good choice as the performers weren't that big of a draw.
Cena Sr. wasn't all that happy over Samoa Joe's exit but he claims to be okay with the Kay and Royce departures.
“So, now I sit back and say to you: that makes sense,” he said to Boston Wrestling MWF's Dan Mirade. “It’s all I can say. That makes sense. If I was the guy in charge [Vince McMahon], I’d be looking at who’s putting a**es in seats, who’s performing, who isn’t, and I’d say, ‘You know what, good luck in your future endeavors.’ That’s the way to do it, brother.”
Cena also felt like WWE should have also dropped Elias, who he sees as a "poor imitation of The Honky Tonk Man." He also noted that the company's repackaging of the stars formerly known as The IIconics simply did not work. Kay took on a new gig offering her CV to various WWE personalities while Royce briefly teamed up with Lacey Evans before the latter announced she was pregnant.
“I think you can always find a way to repackage a product and put it back on its shelf,” he continued. “I think the case was it just didn’t work, and the fact is, 'I’m not gonna work with it anymore, let’s move on, we’ll find somebody else.' Unfortunate but I think the one thing they can do is look back and say, like I do, 'I had my day in the sun.'”
New Beginnings
Billie Kay has reverted to her real name, Jessica McKay. Peyton Royce is now going by Cassie Lee.
The wrestlers had some great moments performing for WWE, with their Tag Team Championship win at WrestleMania 35 as one of the most notable. They also beat Asuka and Naomi at the WWE Super ShowDown in Melbourne, Australia, in 2018.
