In Johnny Manziel's CFL debut and his first game for the Montreal Alouettes, things went about as awful as they could go. He threw an interception on his first pass attempt and four interceptions overall, getting pulled in a 50-11 loss.

Manziel's debut was hyped heavily by the media who cover the CFL. The former 2012 Heisman Trophy winner had been traded by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats after practicing with the team for a few weeks only to be given the ball to open his first contest as a member of the Montreal roster. His debut was nothing short of a disaster. As he described it, "it went just about as bad as it could possibly go."

His first pass was picked off by Larry Dean and while there were glimpses of his scrambling ability, he made mistake after mistake and his receivers didn't bail him out, making mistakes of their own. The Alouettes ended up losing by 39 points and this is now the third league in which Manziel has debuted and not thrown a touchdown.

There was some opinion that perhaps Manziel was being thrown in too quickly, having just arrived at Alouettes camp but he denied feeling unprepared in his postgame comments.

"Everybody has an opinion," Manziel said. "Would it have been nice to be here for three weeks and then get the start? Sure. He then added, "But I didn't lack any confidence coming into the game. I didn't feel unprepared."

While Manziel admitted he put his team behind the 8-ball early, his teammates did come to bat for his performance, suggesting it wasn't entirely his fault. And, Alouettes coach Mike Sherman said he will continue with Manziel as his starter giving him a chance to learn from his mistakes.

To Hamilton's credit, they did play excellent defense and deserved to win that game more than Manziel made mistakes. The final score was likely a combination of the good and the bad. A poor game all around for the Alouettes, Manziel and the team will get another chance at redemption when he starts against the Ottawa Redblacks on August 11th.
