After taking a big hit in his last CFL start versus the Ottawa Redblacks, nearly one week later, Johnny Manziel is reportedly suffering from concussion symptoms and will likely sit out Saturday's game against the Edmonton Eskimos.

Manziel, the Montreal Alouettes new quarterback, a former Heisman Trophy winner, and a first-round NFL draft pick appeared to be fine when he ran off the field in the third quarter of the game against Ottawa. He was checked out by doctors, seemed coherent and was able to recite the team's playbook. There was no reason to be concerned other than realizing Manziel had taken a nasty hit. He returned to the game, fought valiantly, but earned his second loss as the Alouettes starter. A few days later, Manziel started experiencing concussion-like symptoms.

On Wednesday, after missing practices on Tuesday and Wednesday, he was placed under the Canadian Football League’s concussion protocol. Alouettes coach, Mike Sherman said, “If I knew there was anything wrong with Johnny. ... I would never put a player in harm’s way and neither would this organization."

In regards to Manziels status, the team said in a statement, “On Tuesday morning, Johnny Manziel mentioned to our medical staff that he felt symptoms that could be associated with the prescribed medication he uses for a previously diagnosed medical condition.” They added, “He then missed practice in order to have some blood work done."

It appears his previous medical conditions combined with the hard goal-line hit he took were enough to warrant pulling Manziel from the practice lineup. Taking precautionary measures, the Alouettes medical staff has placed Manziel under the CFL concussion protocol for further observation. "Manziel will be closely observed and assessed in the next few days.”

Sherman added that if Manziel is able to practice Thursday there’s a chance he could play against Edmonton, but that appears unlikely. More likely, the team gives Manziel time to rest to ensure he recovers. Since Montreal is 1-7 this season, Manziel starting is not all of a sudden going to make the team a playoff contender.
