After his win over Shota Umino at NJPW Dominion, Jon Moxley declared that he wants in on this year's G1 Climax.
It's hard to believe that this time two months ago, Jon Moxley was still under contract with WWE. In that time he has left WWE, shocked the world at Double Or Nothing, and become IWGP United States Champion. This weekend, Moxley continued his work in New Japan when he took on Shota Umino at Dominion.
No offense to Umino, but the result of this match was never in any doubt. Moxley was always going to win, and that's exactly what he did courtesy of his new move, the Death Rider. The most exciting thing about Moxley's career right now is trying to guess what's next. We know that he is under contract with AEW, but what does the former WWE Champion have planned with New Japan?
Moxley let us know exactly what he has planned after his Dominion win. Mox grabbed a mic, looked down the camera, and told the world that he wants in on this year's G1 Climax. Quite the statement of intent, and one the in-house crowd were big fans of. For those unfamiliar with the G1, it is an annual tournament held by NJPW which has taken place every year since 1974.
The G1 consists of two pools. Each wrestler competes against every other wrestler in their respective pool. Competitors earn two points for a win, one for a draw, and zero for a loss. The eventual winners of each pool compete against each other for the right to be known as the winner of the G1 Climax. The tournament tends to last around four weeks and takes place in August.
Fans will have been putting together Moxley dream matches in their heads ever since he first revealed he was leaving WWE. By entering the G1, we could be about to get a lot of those dream matches sooner than we thought. Depending on who's in his pool, Moxley could have matches with the likes of Kazuchika Okada, Hiroshi Tanahashi, and Tetsuya Naito this summer. Strap yourselves in for what could be the craziest G1 Climax ever.
